The White King and his sons

As explained earlier a Laocoon of draughts has nothing to do with Laocoon, the Trojan Priest, who was killed together with his two sons by giant snakes. In a draughts Laocoon position the King is the winner, the only survivor, is not a Priest and does not have two sons. In order to come a bit closer to the Greek and Roman stories, I added two sons to a Laocoon position. In accordance to the stories the two sons do not survive, though there is not any snake involved.
The result is remarkable, because the effect is totally different as with a pure Laocoon. The main thing here is that the White King has a difficult choice how to capture. The composition has more to offer. Please notice that White should not choose 16-11 too soon, because 12-8, 25-20 (15 x 24) 16-11, 39-33, 43 x 23 (19 x 28!!) is a draw.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W12,16,23,25,38,39,42,43,48:B6,10,14,15,18,19,27,28,31,32."] 1. 12-8 18x29 2. 25-20 15x24 3. 39-33 28x39 4. 43x23 32x43 5. 48x39 19x28 6. 16-11 6x17 7. 8-3 31-36

After (31-37) Black loses immediately, after (31-36) the diagram below results.

Black does not make it easy for White. The King has to choose between 11 different ways to capture four Blacks!

The right way to capture seems to be 3 x 11.
3 x 11 (36-41) 42-37, 11-16 (10-14) 39-33! (27-31) 16 x 38 (31-37) 38-47 (14-20) 33-29.
3 x 11 (27-32) 39-33 (32-38) 42-37, 11-16 (29-33 ) 37-31, 16 x 4 .
However, Black plays differently. Zwart speelt echter anders:
3 x 11 (27-32!) 39-33 (36-41!)=.

The Applet shows how to play. The nice end game contains three interesting false solutions as indicated above the Applet.

3 x 8 (41) 37, 19 (15)
- 34 (20) 29 (24!)=.
- 24 (37) 19 (33!)=.
- 5 (20) 10 (25!) 14 (30) 19 (34!, 33, 39)=.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK3,39,42:B10,14,17,24,27,28,36."] 1. 3x8 36-41 2. 42-37 41x32 3. 8-19 10-15 4. 19-14 15-20 5. 14x25 32-38 6. 39-33 38x29 7. 25-14 28-33 8. 14-20 29-34 9. 20x38 34-40 10. 38-33 40-45 11. 33-50

So far something else than a pure Laocoon. However, there is room left for a real one. The author of the Laocoon position is H. Cordier the French draughts composer and also the father of A. Cordier, the draughts Champion of France. Indeed, the same as the Laocoon World Record holder with a King against 10 Blacks! I published a complicated composition on the Laocoon of H. Cordier a few years before. The new one is at least as good with a surprising forcing. This recent composition is dedicated to H. Cordier and his talented son.

The initial position of the new composition seems to be impossible. However, I do not need to give a long explanation, because we have Applets today. Applets are a perfect way to prove that an initial position is legitimate. So I give the proof first. When the Applet is finished, the initial position of the composition is reached.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK2,6,7,11,24,25,28,29,30,33,42,43,44,48:B1,8,9,12,13,15,16,18,27,31,35."] 1. 28-22 18-23 2. 29x18 12x23 3. 25-20 1x12 4. 2-7 12x1 5. 22-18 13x22

11-7 (1 x 12) 42-37!! (31 x 42) 48 x 37.

A suprising forcing! Black is forced to play (23-28) as proved by the variants below.
- (8-13) 6-1 (23-28) 1 x 21, 43-39 (13-18) 33-29 (18-23, 22 x 13) 39-33 (13-18) 33-29 (18-22) 29-23.
- (12-18) 28, 19, 1, 46.
-(16-21) 14, 32, 1, 16.
-(23-29) 43-39, 19, 1, 3.
Een verrassende forcing! Zwart is gedwongen (23-28) te spelen zoals bovenstaande varianten aantonen.

After (23-28) the Laocoon of H. Cordier appears.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W6,20,24,30,33,37,43,44:B8,9,12,15,16,22,23,27,35."] 1... 23-28 2. 37-32 27x40 3. 24-19 15x13 4. 6-1 28x39 5. 1x45 35x24 6. 45-50 24-30 7. 50x34 13-19 8. 34-43 19-24 9. 43-38 24-30 10. 38-43 30-35 11. 43-49 16-21 12. 49x16 35-40 13. 16-11 40-45 14. 11-50

Black could also take (35 x 24) or (35 x 13, 15 x 24) instead of (28 x 39). All these variations are thematic. Zwart kan ook (35 x 24) slaan of (35 x 13, 15 x 24) i.p.v. (28 x 39). In alle gevallen is het scherp uit.
-(35 x 24) 1 x 3 ( 28 x 39) 3 x 35 (16-21) 35 x 26.

Laocoons, one of the fascinating themes of our beautiful game!
